None of this required launching a separate product or creating new hardware categories. The work was architectural: fine-tuning language models for specific tasks (email summaries, notification prioritization), optimizing inference on A-series chips, and opening new APIs—Intents—so third-party developers can expose application logic to Siri. When UberEats implements an intent for "order a hamburger," Siri gains the ability to complete that task. The interface becomes a conversation instead of an app.

Where Apple hits its limits, it defers to OpenAI (and eventually other vendors). The partnership acknowledges a practical reality: some requests benefit from larger, more general models. Rather than pretend its on-device models can do everything, Apple asks permission to escalate—showing users when data will leave the device and what service will handle it. This honesty contrasts sharply with competitors that obscure where processing happens.

The real competition isn't with other AI features; it's with the fragmented landscape of AI startups desperate to prove a market exists. Apple's move marginalizes single-purpose AI devices by proving they were never necessary. The company's moat isn't the model; it's the integration and the trust signal of privacy-first processing. For developers, the opportunity lies in Intents and third-party Intelligence APIs—not in building the next ChatGPT clone.
